Website Traffic: Quality Is Better Than Big Numbers
Some years ago I was in the habit of taking what I called ‘bargain’ deals for traffic like “Get 1000 hits to your website for just $8.95”. And for a long time I wondered whether those visitors ever arrived, since I wasn’t making any sales.
At one point I started using a tracking service which enabled me to monitor how many visitors I had, where the advert was placed that they responded to, which ad it was, and where they were, all of this information available in the ‘drill-down’ provided with the tracking service.
Another of those ads crossed my path, and once again I paid, except this time I placed a tracking link in place of the website address I wanted the traffic to go. The tracking link would redirect to my site, but also record every visitor that went through the link.
I discovered that all of my visitors came from the same IP address – the ‘hits’ were being sent by a computer! Not one visitor was real! I got a refund, needless to say. I then decided to test all my other advertising resources, and after a lot of research and thinking I arrived at the following conclusions:
1.Unless you are employing a tracker you could be getting conned a lot, and in addition you cannot possibly know which ads or advertising resources are working.
2.It’s important to understand the motivation of the visitor – are they looking at your page because they have a genuine interest, or because they are trying to benefit in some other way? Credit -based mailers and traffic exchanges both have the same characteristic – people are clicking on ads for points, and so it is likely that they will only give the site a quick look, after all their time is engaged in building up credits, and they will often have multiple windows open, looking at none in any detail. Using a long promo page in exchanges and credit mailers would be futile – using a ’squeeze’ page that fits snugly into the browser window is ideal and copy should take less ten seconds to read. I often use a different tracking link in credit mailers so I can see how many are clicking for credit and how many are interested in my ad.
3.’Any old visitor’ is not better than none. The problem with any volume-oriented mailing site is that everyone is there to market their offer, not look at someone else’s. The object of the exercise is not to try to sell them then and there – that way, you only get one bite at the cherry. The goal is to get them on your own list, where you can promote multiple offers and any time you want to. So offer something that will benefit them, ideally at no cost.
4.Classifieds sites and free ad forums are for freebie hunters and are an opportunity to grow your list, not an environment in which you should be trying to sell anything.
5.Getting Traffic from Articles and Search Engines are the two most effective and targeted forms of traffic, because the visitor is very specifically interested in the keywords and content. Both require some work and attention to detail but there is nothing better and the investment in time and energy is well worth it.
Spend the extra time. learn how to use squeeze pages and autoresponders, and Articles will get you traffic, virtually forever. They provide leverage like no other promotional process, offering many views of your links for an hour’s work…
Search Engine Traffic may be a little more time-consuming and may require a little more expertise, but there is no doubt that it is the best traffic in the game. It’s the most targeted form of traffic, and it will continue to create opportunities for income without very much maintenance.
Don’t take the Easy Road when it comes to Traffic – Invest time, money and effort in Quality Traffic.
